To make Daisy crawl, you have to bend down and move a little dog treat along the ground in front of her nose. She told me recently that she only crawls after the treat because she knows she will get it. If it looked like she wasn’t going to get it, she said, she was of the opinion that she would stop. What is that supposed to mean? I said. What sort of insight is that? Daisy rolled her eyes. Because you only crawl after treats you won’t get, she said. You are always crawling after treats. Your worst fear is that you will eat them all up. (I decided to give Daisy some quiet time after that.)
