Once Daisy told me an allegory. I was out on the Walk of Life, she said, held fast by the Lead of Sorrow. When there was slack in the lead, I took long Sniffs of Curiosity. Two ravens crossed my path but I could not chase them. They alighted high in a tree. Yonder was the Fox Poo of Delight. Then I saw the Intolerable Cat. I knew that to fight the cat was my destiny. But every step forward became a step back. Try as I might, I could not reach the cat before the Door of Opportunity closed on me. I sat by the door and growled for half an hour. Do you see what I’m saying? she said. I’m wondering what you’ve been eating, I replied. Just the Food of Hardship, said Daisy.
